This week we have big updates to highlighting and annotations along with integration and big performance improvements.

Highlights in the Margin

Skyreader has technically supported highlighting for a while now but the implementation was very basic. Your highlights didn't sync across devices and you couldn't really do much with them.

Now your highlights are properly saved to the Skyreader backend so they show up across all your devices. Highlights are private by default but with one click you can save them publicly to your PDS via.

To make a highlight you can either double click/tap a paragraph to quickly highlight the entire thing or select just the text you want to remember. You can also add notes to engage more deeply with your reading.

You can now also see all your highlights across all articles in one place in the new highlights view.

When sharing an article to your new linkblog, you can easily find and insert a highlight as a quote in one tap.

Performance

I've also done an optimization pass across all of Skyreader and it should be much faster now. The main improvements were around being smarter about data syncing and fixing memory bugs.

If you had been frustrated by how slow feed updates were taking, check it out again!

Feedback and what's next

Next up is polishing the new highlighting and sharing features. Try them out and let me know what's working and what still feels off.

I'm also planning to add support for new kinds of feed sources soon (e.g. newsletters, social media accounts, etc.) so let me know what you'd like to see first.
